Man shot by Seattle police near Carkeek Park dies; was registered sex offender

2-27-2013 Washington:

A man shot multiple times by police in northwest Seattle has died at Harborview Medical Center, according to police sources, who say the man was a registered sex offender convicted of attacking a woman two years ago near the scene of Tuesday night's shooting.

The man, identified by sources as Jack Sun Keewatinawin, 21, was charged with second-degree assault with intent to commit rape after attacking a woman jogging in Carkeek Park in October 2011. A Department of Corrections spokeswoman told The Seattle Times a warrant had been issued for his arrest on Jan. 28 after he failed to report to his community corrections officer and his treatment provider.

Officers responded Tuesday night to reports of a domestic disturbance and possible hostage situation near the park. A caller told dispatchers that a man was threatening to hold his father hostage with a knife.

Detective Mark Jamieson says officers were able to separate the suspect and his father, but the suspect continued to be difficult.

2 police officers shot dead in California

2-27-2013 California:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Authorities have released the names of two Santa Cruz police officers who were shot and killed Tuesday.

Santa Cruz police Chief Kevin Vogel says Sgt. Loren Butch Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler were shot and killed as they followed up on a sexual assault investigation Tuesday.

Vogel says Baker was a 28-year veteran of the department and Butler was a 10-year veteran of the department.

Vogel says Baker was married and the father of two daughters, while Butler leaves behind two young sons.

Police did not release the ages of the two officers.

The suspect who was also killed in the shooting was identified as 35-year-old Jeremy Goulet.

Two police officers were shot and killed Tuesday while investigating a sexual assault, and a suspect was also fatally shot, authorities said.

The officers, one male and the other a woman, were shot around 3:30 p.m. as they investigated a report of a sexual assault. Their deaths were confirmed by Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak.

A suspect was shot and killed a short time later while authorities were pursuing the gunman, the sheriff's office said.

The names and ages of the officers and the suspect have not been released. Out of respect for the families, there was no expected timeline as to when the names of the deceased officers would be released, officials said.

Residents on the adjoining streets where the shootings occurred received an automatic police call warning them to stay locked inside. About half an hour later, more than a dozen semi-automatic shots echoed down the streets in a brief shootout that killed the suspect.

Police were going door-to-door in the neighborhood, searching homes, garages, even closets, although the sheriff said authorities didn't know if another suspect remained at large.

Police, sheriff's deputies and FBI agents filled intersections, some with guns drawn, in what is ordinarily a quiet, residential neighborhood in the community about 60 miles south of San Francisco.

A store clerk a few buildings away from the shooting said the barrage of gunfire was "terrifying."

Miami fugitive shot dead by authorities near Grapevine Lake

2-16-2013 Texas:

A fugitive who escaped from a Miami-Dade police transport Monday was fatally shot by authorities near Grapevine Lake.

Sgt. Robert Eberling, spokesman for the Grapevine Police Department, says Alberto Morales, 42, was located at 12:25 Saturday morning near the 2200 block of Lake Ridge Drive, which is just a little more than three miles from the Wal-Mart on State Highway 114 from which he escaped Monday night. Grapevine police and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force found him hiding in a wooded area.

About two hours earlier, Grapevine police had received a report of a home that had been burglarized nearby, in the 2100 block of Forest Hills Road. Eberling says that officers at the scene learned that men’s clothing and jewelry were missing from the home.

“Members of the Fugitive Task Force responded to search the surrounding area,” says Eberling’s early morning release. “With the assistance of a Fort Worth Police Department helicopter, Morales was spotted in a wooded area not far from the home that had been broken into. Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Miami-Dade Police Department and Grapevine Police Department saturated the wooded area. Morales was located and was shot while trying to apprehend him.”

Convicted child molester beaten to death at correctional facility

2-16-2013 Indiana:

A convicted child molester is believed to have been beaten to death at the New Castle Correctional Facility.

Jeremiah Taylor was found at the bottom of a stairwell inside the prison Thursday. He was taken to an area hospital and then flown to Methodist Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Taylor had been incarcerated at New Castle since July of 2012, and was serving eight years for a conviction on a Child Molest charge out of Noble County.

Prison death investigated as homicide

The Friday death of a New Castle Correctional Facility inmate is being investigated as a homicide.

Jeremiah K. Taylor, 37, of Ligonier in northern Indiana, died Friday morning at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

According to an Indiana State Police press release, Taylor was found unconscious at the bottom of a stairwell inside the prison about 11:05 p.m. Thursday.

He was taken by ambulance to Henry County Hospital, then flown by medical helicopter to Indianapolis.

Investigators believe the inmate’s injuries were “not the result of an accident, but were the result of Taylor having been battered shortly before being found in the stairwell,” the ISP release said.

Taylor had been held at the NCCF since July.

Last June, Noble Superior Court Judge Robert Kircsh sentenced Taylor to eight years in prison after he pleaded guilty to child molesting, a Class B felony carrying a standard 10-year sentence.

Taylor was charged with molesting a preschooler in 2009, but was apparently not apprehended until 2011.

The judge imposed a 20-year sentence with 12 years suspended. Taylor was scheduled to be released from prison in May 2018, according to state Department of Correction records.

In January, an inmate at the NCCF from Muncie, also a convicted child molester, died of what an autopsy determined to be natural causes.

His sudden death at age 44 prompted that man’s family to express concern that he had suffered a fate he feared, retribution for his crime at the hands of fellow inmates.

However, Mike Smith, public information officer at the NCCF, said at the time that while that man’s conviction might have prompted harassment at other prisons where he was housed, that stigma likely did not follow him to New Castle.

Police: Member of Penn ‘79 Final Four team killed by wife, she says he had watched child porn

2-12-2013 Pennsylvania:

PHILADELPHIA — A member of the University of Pennsylvania’s 1979 Final Four team was fatally stabbed by his wife, who told police she had caught him looking at child pornography, according to court documents.

Matthew White was found stabbed in the neck around 12:45 p.m. Monday in bed at his home, police said, and was pronounced dead a short time later. An officer responding to the home for a report of a stabbing found White’s wife, Maria Rey Garcia-Pellon, as she pulled into the driveway, authorities said. As she was being taken into custody, according to a police affidavit, she said, “I caught him looking at pornography, young girls. I love kids. I had to do it.”

White was the starting center on the Penn team that went to the 1979 semifinals before losing 101-67 to eventual national champion Michigan State, led by Magic Johnson. White went on to be drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers and also played in Europe.

Garcia-Pellon, 52, was in custody, and a telephone message left at her home was not immediately returned. It could not immediately be determined if she had an attorney.

Investigators said they interviewed a friend of Garcia-Pellon, who told them she had come to her house Monday afternoon and said she had stabbed her 53-year-old husband after catching him viewing pornography — possibly child pornography — on the computer. The friend called police.
