Police fatally shoot man accused of trying to rape, rob woman

5-7-2014 Florida:

SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. — Police said they shot and killed a man who was allegedly trying to rob and rape a woman inside a Volusia County tanning salon Tuesday night.

Police said officers from both the South Daytona and Daytona Beach police departments responded to a holdup alarm at Hot Tans on Beville Road near Nova Road.

Investigators said 27-year-old Cheyne Pinkney locked himself and a Hot Tans employee inside the salon Tuesday.

Officers said they believe he tried to rape and rob her.

"(I) kind of looked out and saw these cop cars coming. And they just kept coming. There was like 50 of them," said witness Janelle Lugo.

According to police, the woman was able to set off the alarm the brought officers to the business.

"The victim started to run out the front door with the suspect behind her with the gun in his hand," said Flynt.

According to police, officers arrived and set up a perimeter around the business.

"The door was locked to the business. South Daytona is familiar with all the businesses and the door should not have been locked," said Jimmie Flynt, with the Daytona Beach Police Department.

According to police, when Pinkney saw officers outside the business, he ran back into the business and out the back door, where he was confronted by officers from the two police departments.

"He proceeded to run out the back door with the gun in his hand and there were several shots fired and the suspect was hit," said Flynt.

Pinkney was transported to Halifax Hospital, where he died.

Police officials would not say if Pinkney fired his gun but witnesses told Channel 9's Renee Stoll that they saw a female officer who was visibly upset at the scene.

"She was very upset, very distraught and the other police officers were trying to comfort her," said witness Deliana Mullen.

FDLE agents will investigate the shooting.

Pinkney's arrest file includes 19 arrests with 44 different criminal charges, many of which investigators said he was committing again on Tuesday when he was shot and killed. ..Source.. by Renee Stoll

Police: Tanning salon rapist told victim he had killed 3 people

The man who raped a woman at a local tanning salon claimed he killed other people and threatened to kill his victim.

Disturbing details from a new report from South Daytona police were revealed Monday.

Cheyne Pinkney, 28, entered several stores in the plaza, including a massage business, before going into Hot Tans.

"The masseuse in there said when he was asking for a massage, she got kind of a weird feeling -- said it creeped her out, and she asked him to leave," said South Daytona police Lt. Dan Dietrich.

According to the police report, Pinkney went in and out of Hot Tans several times, asking questions. He then returned, grabbed the victim and pointed a gun at her head.

Police say Pinkney locked the front door and turned off the "open" sign, then forced the victim into the back of the store where he poured oil on her and raped her.

The victim stated the assault went on for a long time and that while Pinkney was raping her at gunpoint, he told her he had killed three people and did not want to kill number four.

The victim saw a chance to run and took off out the front door, with Pinkney chasing her at gunpoint, until he saw police.

According to the report, Pinkney instead ran out the back where two waiting officers had heard shouts of "gun" over the radio. They unholstered their weapons and ordered Pinkney to drop his weapon.

Instead, officials say Pinkney began to raise his gun, pointing toward one of the two officers, and the officers opened fire.

Pinkney later died at the hospital.

Police said they believe Pinkney's comments about killing three people were not true and were just meant to scare the victim. ..Source.. by Claire Metz
