Deputies: Man was shot 'because he's a sex offender'

CITY OF SHASTA LAKE, Calif. - The Shasta County Jail has released the mugshot of a suspect who deputies said shot another man after learning he was a registered sex offender.

Timothy Gould, 28, was arrested Monday around 5:30 p.m. after officers had identified him as a suspect in an earlier shooting in the City of Shasta Lake.

According to a news release from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, the motive behind the shooting was due to the victim Roy Matagora, 62, being disliked because he is a registered sex offender.

The Megan's Law website for registered sex offenders showed Matagora was previously convicted of several charges including rape, and several charges relating to the sexual abuse of a person under the age of 18.

The shooting investigation revealed Matagora had been spending time with a woman in Shasta County, Tanna Curran, 25, during the week prior to the shooting. Investigators said Curran had been an acquaintance of Matagora's and she would borrow his vehicle and associate with him at his home.

Deputies said sometime Friday, Curran discovered that Matagora was a registered sex offender from other people who knew of Matagora's past. Curran and Gould looked at the Megan's Law website and saw Matagora was in fact listed as a registered sex offender.

FREELAND, MI — The Michigan State Police have released the name of an inmate killed at the Saginaw Correctional Facility, but police are withholding the name of a prisoner suspected in connection with the death.

Lt. David Kaiser confirmed that 23-year-old Jason N. Turnbull died Wednesday, Jan. 13 in the Freeland prison. Turnball was serving a minimum of 10 years in prison for third- and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in Livingston County.

Kaiser said an inmate suspected in connection with Turnbull's death will not be identified until formal charges are issued.

About 9:30 p.m. Jan. 13, prison staff was alerted to an assault they said was occurring between two cellmates. Staff rushed to the cell where they found Turnbull unresponsive.

State Prison Inmate Gets Life Sentence for Fatally Stabbing Another Inmate

12-10-2015 Maine:

A Maine State Prison inmate, who fatally stabbed another inmate more than 80 times, was sentenced to life in prison Thursday.

Richard Stahursky, 36, pleaded guilty last week to murdering Micah Boland, 37. Boland’s family addressed the courtroom Thursday, saying no one deserves to die the way Boland did, and that they want Stahursky to spend the rest of his life in prison.

The court let Stahursky read a lengthy statement. He showed no remorse for his actions, saying in part “If the courts were to offer me my freedom today, I would decline.”

“I have no remorse for what I did to that child molester. In fact I sleep a lot better at night knowing that there is one less child molester alive,” said Stahursky in his statement to the judge. “I made the choice to become the judge jury and executioner of that sex offender.”

Michael DeWayne Walker was serving a 21-year sentence for aggravated sexual assault of a child when he was put in a cell with Wilbert "Peanut" Hamilton in 2006.

Hamilton beat him to death, and Walker's parents have sued on the grounds that guards and prison officials knew Hamilton was a violent psychotic and that he was allowed to have steel-toed boots in his cell.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice employees have sought to have the suit dismissed on grounds of immunity, but federal judge Kenneth Hoyt has ruled the parents' claims can be heard.

There's a factual dispute over how long the beating went on -- Walker's parents say it lasted five hours, and guards should absolutely have been able to hear it, while the defendants in the suit say it was only a few minutes.

The guards also say there was no formal policy made clear to them that child-sex offenders should be kept isolated from the general prison population for their safety, or that the steel-toed boots had to be left in the prison work area and not taken into the cell.
