Records offer details about child porn suspect dead in New Market shooting

3-7-2013 Tennessee:

KNOXVILLE — The FBI investigation that resulted in the shooting death of an East Tennessee man early Wednesday started out as a child pornography investigation in Australia.

Federal warrants have identified Scott Evans, 40, New Market, Tenn., as the man killed Wednesday when FBI agents were attempting to serve warrants at his 2332 Stapleton Road home.

Evans was facing arrest as part of an investigation into possession and distribution of child pornography.

An FBI agent with the agency’s Knoxville division “was involved in a shooting” at the Stapleton Road address, according to a release from Special Agent Kelly Kindness.

“The subject died as a result of injuries he sustained,” according to Kindness.

The FBI’s Inspection Division is reviewing the shooting, according to Kindness.

Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig said today, “We can’t release anything at this time. We are still investigating.”

According to the search warrant, items to be seized at Evans’ home included computer software and hardware, computer-related documentation and computer passwords, any child pornography and information leading to the identity and ages of the children depicted in the images

According to warrants, the investigation began on March 1, 2012 when the Queensland Police Department Task Force Argos in Brisbane, Australia, arrested an Australian citizen who was charged in connection with distributing child pornography to hundreds of individuals worldwide.

Queensland police obtained access to the suspect’s email account and their investigation revealed several email messages sent in November 2011 in which multiple child pornography images were exchanged.

An FBI search warrant at Yahoo Inc., email provider involved, produced another 12,000 email messages in the account between February 2012 and January 2013. The vast majority appeared to be conversations with dozens of individuals who the Australian suspect met on Craigslist, warrants state.

According to the warrant, most of these conversations were sexually explicit and included images and videos depicting adult pornography, child pornography, child erotica and bestiality.

Further investigation revealed seven other email accounts that sent or received the child pornography/child erotica. The identity of the user was revealed through email messages and the images.

According to documents, from July 31, through Oct. 29, the individual revealed his real name was “Scott” and that he was a truck driver. Thirty-six email messages were sent from a telephone number and those messages contained approximately 163 images, most of which depicted family photographs of prepubescent and early pubescent females on a boat on a lake or river.

One of the main IP addresses utilized was connected to Evans, warrants state. A driver’s license photograph of Evans was compared to three images found in one specific account and a positive identification was made.

Evans at one time worked as a truck driver with Maryville company KT Cartage. Nobody at the business returned a call requesting comment today.
