Demple Avenue homicide victim identified

1-23-2014 Ohio:

Dayton Police detectives are working today to sift through conflicting stories about what happened inside 1028 Demple Avenue Wednesday night where a man was shot and killed.

The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Jonathan Scott Rogers. He reportedly lived at that address with numerous other individuals.

Taylor Bailey, who lives two doors down and identified herself as a family friend, said she's known the Rogers most of her life and considers him her brother.

She said from what she's heard, the shooter was someone known the residents of the home who may have been trying to rob them.

Police said Wednesday night that they were sorting through conflicting information about what happened inside the home. There were reportedly seven people there at the time of the shooting.

Rogers was convicted last year of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and is registered as a Tier II sex offender.

"It was a big misunderstanding is what it was. He thought she was 18, because he met her at the Hookah Bar," Bailey said.

It is unknown at this time if his death had anything to do with that crime.

Several young people who answered the door at 1028 Demple on Thursday declined to comment on the shooting.

Police and a medic unit were called there at about 10:20 p.m.

Rogers was shot at least once in the chest, Dayton Sgt. Shawn Smiley said. He died at Miami Valley Hospital at about 10:45 p.m.

Police were interviewing everyone who was inside the home at the time of the shooting, and they offered conflicting descriptions of the incident, the sergeant said.

He said police also discovered narcotics in the house that may or may not be connected to the incident.

This is the third Dayton homicide of the year.

Six people, including his girlfriend, witnessed the shooting. All were questioned by detectives, but no one was arrested.

"There were a lot of people involved in this. There was a lot of evidence," Dayton Police Lt. Wendy Stiver said. "There's a lot of work left for the detectives to do to figure out what happened."

Several young people who answered the door at 1028 Demphle on Thursday declined to comment on the shooting.
