Police investigate possible Providence homicide; man dies weeks after beating

6-15-2014 Rhode Island:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The recent death of a 69-year-old Providence man is being investigated as a possible homicide.

Milton Lyles, who died Thursday, had been found severely beaten on the ground in 300-block of Broad Street on May 19, said Providence Police Maj. David Lapatin. Lyles was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, but never recovered.

The police are searching for several suspects, but Lapatin did not discuss any descriptions of the men. It’s unclear what led to the attack on Lyles, but Lapatin said the older man appeared to be an “innocent party.”

Lyles, who lived nearby on Pine Street, was a registered sex offender with a criminal record in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, according to police and court records.

The police are waiting for a determination from the state Medical Examiner’s office on the cause of his death. ..Source.. by Amanda Milkovits



Suspects in Providence beating death ordered held

6-23-2014:

PROVIDENCE - Three suspects charged in connection with the beating death of a man in Providence were ordered held without bail Monday.

Jared Jackson, 20, and Thomas Rose, 22, were each arraigned on a murder charge in Providence District Court. The third defendant, David Durrett, 31, was charged with larceny.

Police said Jackson and Rose beat 68-year-old Milton Lyles on Broad Street on May 19. Lyles died of his injuries June 13.

Durrett is accused of stealing money and a cellphone from Lyles while he was on the ground.

Police said they're investigating what led to the fight that landed Lyles in the hospital.

Men arraigned in beating death of sex offender

7-22-2014:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Two men have been ordered held without bond on murder charges in the fatal beating of a convicted sex offender.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/T55QAh ) 22-year-old Thomas Rose of East Providence and 20-year-old Jared Jackson of Pawtucket appeared in District Court on Monday. They did not enter pleas.

A third man, 31-year-old David Durrett, was arraigned on charges he stole $13 and a cell phone from the dying man. He is being held on $25,000 bond.

Sixty-eight-year-old Milton Lyles was found beaten on Broad Street on May 19 and died at Rhode Island Hospital on June 13.

Lyles lived near the crime scene. Police and court records show he was a registered sex offender with criminal records in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. ..Source.. by Staff



3 Arrested in Sex Offender's Murder, Robbery

Police in Providence, Rhode Island have arrested three people in connection with the murder and robbery of a 68-year-old sex offender last month.

Jared Jackson, 20, and Thomas Rose, 22, were arrested Thursday and charged with murder for allegedly assaulting Milton Lyles on the 300 Block of Broad Street in Providence May 19. Lyles, a convicted sex offender, died of his injuries on June 13 and an autopsy ruled that his death was as a result of the assault.

Also arrested was David Durrett, 31, who allegedly went through Lyles' pockets and stole a cell phone and cash from him. He is charged with larceny from a person.
