10-20-2010 Texas:
Authorities say Shawn Phillips, 32, told his wife he was 'going to take care of it his way' after a family member accused Mark A. Gabler, 33, of sexually assaulting her.
Authorities have accused a Bexar County man of killing another man in retaliation for an alleged sexual assault of one of his family members.
Declining to call police, Shawn Phillips, 32, told his wife he was "going to take care of it his way" after a family member accused Mark A. Gabler, 33, of sexually assaulting a relative, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Police found Gabler's decomposed body May 20 in a hayfield in Southeast Bexar County after they responded to a service call at 13400 Donop Road near the intersection with Old Corpus Christi Road. He was identified through his fingerprints, the affidavit states.
Arrested Saturday, Phillips was being held at Bexar County Jail on a murder charge and in lieu of posting $75,000 bail. ..Source.. by Peter J. Holley
Woman is third charged in revenge killing
San Antonio police on Monday arrested a woman accused of assisting in an April killing.
Richelle Vasquez, 34, is suspected in the murder of Mark A. Gabler, 33, whose remains were found in a Bexar County field on May 20.
Vasquez became the third person arrested in the case. Kenneth Nelson, 40, was arrested on Dec. 5 and Shawn Phillips, 32, was arrested in October. All are charged with murder.
The three conspired to kill Gabler, rather than turning to police, after he was accused of molesting a young relative of Phillips, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
According to the affidavit, Vasquez helped lure Gabler into the truck the group used to transport him; later, she watched as Gabler was beaten and stabbed to death on April 26, the affidavit states.
All of those arrested have acknowledged their roles in Gabler's murder and told investigators that Michael Sorrell, 33, helped them, according to authorities. Sorrell has been charged with murder but is still at large. ..Source.. by Sarah Mills
Man sentenced in vigilante killing
9-9-2014:
SAN ANTONIO — Shawn Thomas Phillips has become the last of three defendants to be sentenced for the vigilante beating death of a man accused of sexually assaulting his relative.
Phillips, 36, pleaded no contest in February to the 2010 murder of Mark Andrew Gabler, 33, in exchange for a cap of no more than 25 years in prison.
State District Judge Lori Valenzuela sentenced Phillips to 22 years in prison Monday.
Richelle Lee Vasquez, 35, who according to court records was responsible for luring Gabler to the remote Southeast Bexar County field where he was killed, was sentenced to 15 years in prison earlier this summer on a reduced charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Kenneth Nelsen, 43, who admitted to police that he helped in the beating, was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Nelsen is a registered sex offender because of a 1996 conviction for aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Gabler's body, described as “mostly bones,” wasn't found until a month after the killing by three men hunting hogs. Nelsen and Phillips told police Gabler was beaten and stabbed in the neck before his throat was slit.
Phillips and Nelsen were identified as suspects in the killing after police obtained surveillance footage of Gabler's debit card being used at various stores. ..Source.. by Michelle Casady
