Authorities: Unknown who fatally shot man after attempted house break-in near Haysville

Someone shot Cody Don Reid in the chest and left him to die Monday afternoon. Who shot him remained unknown Tuesday.

Sedgwick County sheriff’s Capt. Greg Pollock said Tuesday that the last thing the 27-year-old registered offender did before he died was try to break into a house in the 7800 block of South Broadway near Haysville.

But it wasn’t the resident who shot Reid, Pollock said. After the resident told Reid he was calling police, Reid ran off. The resident heard gunshots, looked out and saw Reid on the ground and a dark-colored car speeding down the driveway toward Broadway, Pollock said.

Deputies found Reid mortally wounded, and he died outside the house.

Authorities are seeking the fleeing car, described as a dark-colored 1980s or 1990s sedan. Pollock asked anyone with information about the car or the shooting to call sheriff’s investigators at 316-660-5300 or Crime Stoppers, 316-267-2111.

On Tuesday, Pollock read a statement about the shooting to reporters and said investigators don’t know who shot Reid. The resident didn’t know Reid, Pollock said. Two people were in the home at the time of the shooting. The resident called 911 about 4:08 p.m.

Sheriff’s investigators had made no arrest in the shooting as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators are checking with other law enforcement agencies around Wichita to see whether Reid was a suspect in a recent string of burglaries, Pollock said.

Christmas was Reid’s birthday. In recent days, he showed up to have his updated picture taken for the state’s offender registry. He was required to register for his lifetime, after being convicted of attempted aggravated indecent liberties with a 14-year-old girl in Olathe when he was 18. The registry also lists convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Wichita in 2013, in which the victims were 3 and 22.

Under his identifying information on the registry, it says he was 6 feet 1 inch, 290 pounds and lists his 25 tattoos: from his neck to his ankles, including skulls, an hourglass and a pitbull head.

This past May, he wrote on a court affidavit that he was working for a lawn and tree care business.

At the time of his death, he was on probation with Sedgwick County Community Corrections. His probation had been extended by seven months, until May 2015, after police accused him of aggravated assault and he failed to attend drug/alcohol treatment. In late July, a judge dismissed the aggravated assault charges after finding that prosecutors had not shown probable cause.

His last address on the registry is in the 600 block of North Gordon, in Wichita, miles from the house near Haysville where he died. ..Source.. by Tim Potter

Sheriff’s official: Homeowner believed to have shot man outside Haysville-area home

Investigators think that a homeowner fired the shot that killed Cody Don Reid outside a home near Haysville on Dec. 29, sheriff’s Capt. Greg Pollock said Wednesday.

Authorities still think that Reid, 27, was trying to break in when the resident encountered Reid, Pollock said.

Authorities have no plans at this point to arrest the 57-year-old homeowner, Pollock said. The investigation will be presented to prosecutors to decide whether charges could be filed, he said.

“It’s a very complicated case,” Pollock said.

A week ago, Pollock told reporters that someone shot Reid once in the chest but that it wasn’t the homeowner. The male resident and a female companion were at the home in the 7800 block of South Broadway when the shooting happened. The resident called 911 at about 4:08 p.m. to report the shooting.

Last week, Pollock gave this account: After the resident told Reid he was calling police, Reid ran off. The resident reported that he heard gunshots, looked out and saw Reid on the ground and a dark-colored car speeding down the driveway toward Broadway, Pollock said.

Pollock said Wednesday, without elaborating, that police are no longer seeking the public’s helping in finding such a vehicle. Pollock said investigators found, in the area where the shooting occurred, a silver vehicle that Reid was using.

Investigators think the homeowner fired two shots and that one hit Reid in the chest, Pollock said Wednesday. A handgun used in the shooting has been recovered.
