March 2013 California:
Sacramento County sheriff's investigators have found no evidence of any altercation or argument leading up to the fatal stabbing of a Carmichael man Wednesday night.
The attack, described by authorities as "brutal," appears to have been "a very spontaneous event" and the motive remains unclear, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos.
Killed in the attack was 65-year-old Roy Shier, according to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
Just before 11 p.m., deputies were called to a home on the 6200 block of Coyle Avenue after receiving a report of a stabbing. Deputies found Shier, who had suffered "significant trauma consistent with sharp force and blunt force trauma," Ramos said. Shier was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses quickly told deputies the identity of the alleged attacker and gave a description. Deputies found the alleged assailant, identified as 26-year-old Kenneth Azlin, on the campus of a nearby elementary school and arrested him. They also found the weapon believed to have been used in the attack, Ramos said.
Azlin was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail early this morning.
Azlin is the grandson of Shier's wife, Ramos said. She and two juvenile family members were at the Coyle Avenue home at the time of the attack but were not injured. ..Source.. by Kim Minugh
Man who killed step-grandfather who molested him gets 12-year sentence
1-2-2015:
A man who fatally stabbed his step-grandfather who molested him when he was a youth was sentenced Friday to 12 years in state prison.
Kenneth Donald Azlin, 28, pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter in the March 27, 2013, killing of Roy Shier, 65.
Azlin maintained that Shier molested him when he was 14 years old, according to court papers filed by defense attorney Greg Foster.
At today’s sentencing, Deputy District Attorney William Satchell told Sacramento Superior Court Judge Marjorie Koller that the molestation “would raise an issue of provocation that would give jurors evidence to find the defendant guilty of voluntary manslaughter instead of murder.”
According to defense and prosecution court papers, Azlin had been homeless and living in Taft when he took a Greyhound bus to Fairfield before swinging through Sacramento on his way back to Kern County.
He contacted his grandmother when he arrived in town to see if he could spend a few days at her house on Coyle Avenue in Carmichael before he returned to Taft, the papers said.
The night of the killing, Shier “re-initiated unwanted sexual touching,” Foster said in an interview at the time his client entered his guilty plea on Dec. 4.
Azlin responded by stabbing Shier twice in the chest, two more times in the side and attempting to strangle him with an electric cord, according to a trial brief filed by Satchell. Azlin was arrested at a nearby school shortly after the attack.
Azlin has one prior felony conviction for taking a motor vehicle without permission in Washington state, according to his probation report. He also has misdemeanor convictions for assault, criminal trespass and petty theft, in Washington and California, the report said.
Since his arrest last year, Azlin has been written up in jail for threatening and cursing the staff, refusing to rise for count and assaulting other inmates. According to Satchell’s trial brief, Azlin’s jail fights were with an accused child molester and another inmate charged with producing, distributing and possessing child pornography.
