Update - Police release name of man found dead after shots fired

12-30-15 North Carolina:

WILMINGTON -- A man found dead early Wednesday in Wilmington was identified as Rashaun Akeem McKoy, according to police.

The body of the 30-year-old Wilmington man was found lying in a yard in the 300 block of Westchester Road about 3 a.m., said Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Catherine Lindsay. Police were in the area after responding to a report of shots fired. Lindsay said it appears McKoy was shot, but the actual cause of death is pending an autopsy. She said his home address is listed as Cypress Grove Drive.

Investigators believe the shooting is drug related, according to the WPD. According to N.C. Department of Correction records, McKoy was released from prison in August after serving a sentence for drug possession and sales. DOC spokeswoman Pamela Walker said McKoy was on post-release supervision until May 2016.

McKoy's death is the 12th homicide investigation for the city in 2015. The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office has investigated at least four homicides in its jurisdiction this year.

Westchester Road is a residential street off Beasley Road. The body was found where Westchester dead ends at Danbury Street.

N.C. Department of Correction records show McKoy was a registered sex offender after being convicted in 2007 of felonious restraint against a minor and indecent liberties with a minor. He was 21 and the victim was 14, N.C. Sex Offender Registry records state. ..Source.. by F.T. Norton
