1 inmate dead, 3 officers injured at Sullivan Correctional Facility

4-14-2015 New York:

FALLSBURG - An inmate died and three state corrections officers were injured Monday at Sullivan Correctional Facility, according to a spokesman for the corrections officers union.

Details of the incident are scarce, but State Police have confirmed they "responded to the facility Monday morning, following a report of an assault on staff."

One of the injured officers was taken to an urgent care center and two others were taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, said James Miller, spokesman for the New York State Corrections Officers Police Benevolent Association. One of the officers taken to the hospital suffered a possible broken arm, and both had head injuries, he said.

The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision confirmed the death of the inmate, but would not comment on the involvement or condition of any corrections officers. A spokeswoman would only say that State Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of the inmate. That investigation is continuing, State Police said.

The inmate was identified as Karl Taylor, 52, who was serving 27½-to-55 years for sex crimes and aggravated harassment of an employee.

In 1995, Taylor was convicted and sentenced in Rensselaer County for three counts of first-degree rape and one count of first-degree sexual abuse. In 2002, he was convicted and sentenced in Chemung County for one count of aggravated harassment of an employee while incarcerated at the Southport Correctional Facility.

Taylor was transferred to Sullivan Correctional Facility on Nov. 25, 2014. He was eligible for parole in 2020.

Sullivan Correctional is a maximum security prison that counts David "Son of Sam" Berkowitz among its inmates.

Earlier this month, the corrections officers union reported another incident of an inmate attacking an officer.

The union reported the inmate attacked the officer on Jan. 19 while being moved within the prison. The inmate, who was not named, hit the officer in the face with his fist and had to be restrained by other officers. The injured officer was taken for treatment.

That union report was part of a press release calling for more staff in the prisons of the mid-Hudson, which includes Sullivan Correctional.

The union said that inmate assaults on staff were on track to show an increase of 50 percent since 2010. ..Source.. by Andrew Beam
