Most parents would do anything to protect their children from pain, including literally laying down their lives.

Fortunately, most parents never find their resolve tested by being put in that position, but Jay Maynor did. By saving his daughter from a traumatic ordeal, Maynor literally gave up forty years of his life, and the world thinks that this is too high of a price to pay for his actions.

Was what Jay Maynor did irresponsible and inexcusable vigilante justice? Or did he do what any other parent might do if they were in his shoes, actions for which the punishment should be significantly less?

Man shot by Madison County deputy dies of injuries; suspect was registered sex offender

1-21-16 Alabama:

The man shot by a Madison County deputy late Wednesday night has died from his injuries.

Randy Joe Sanders Jr., 33, died following surgery at Huntsville Hospital, according to Lt. Michael Salomonsky of the Madison County Sheriff's Office. The Huntsville Police Department is investigating the shooting, at Sheriff Blake Dorning's request, and a shooting review board will conduct its own investigation next week.

Deputies were called just after 11 p.m. Wednesday to Highway 231 in Meridianville, south of Wells Road, for a report of a man with a gun acting erratically at a nearby convenience store. When a deputy arrived, he tried to make contact with the man, later identified as Sanders, but Sanders refused to talk and fled from the deputy.

After a short foot pursuit into the area of the Inspiration Pointe subdivision, Sanders allegedly repeatedly refused to stop and show the deputy his hands.

Burglar shot to death inside Tarrant home identified

3-19-15 Alabama:

Authorities today released the name of a man shot to death last weekend when he broke into a Tarrant home.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the man as Ronnie Anthony Brooks. He was 26.

The shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Springdale Road.

Brooks was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at 10:56 a.m. Sunday, according to the coroner's office.

Tarrant police detective Sgt. Phillip George said the homeowner, who is in his 70s, and his son, who is in his 40s, were home when the man broke in through the back door.

The son woke up and saw Brooks entering his bedroom. He fired several shots.

17-year-old fatally shot during home invasion, rape, robbery, Gadsden police say

4-14-15 Alabama:

Gadsden police say a 17-year-old was shot to death Monday following an apparent home invasion, rape and robbery.

Capt. Bobby Jackson said the sequence of events began about 3 a.m. Monday. Three men, at least one with a handgun, committed a home invasion robbery in the 2100 block of Norris Avenue.

The resident, a 37-year-old woman, told police three men kicked in the front door, awakening her. One of the men came into her bedroom, put a gun to her head and raped her while the other two ransacked the home.

The two men left, but the robber assaulting her began beating her in the head with the gun and demanding money. The woman told her attacker that a neighbor down the street kept all her money. The robber then forced the woman down the street to the neighbor's home on South 21st Street, the woman told police.

MPD identify victim killed in Tillman’s corner parking lot as registered sex offender

1-5-2015 Alabama:

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Mobile Police have released the name of the victim who was shot and killed on Friday at a parking lot on Highway 90 in Tillman’s Corner.

According to police, 50-year-old James Naylor was shot in the head outside Kentucky Fried Chicken and was taken by ambulance to USA Medical Center.

The person who shot Naylor has not been charged. The case is being sent to a grand jury to determine if there will be criminal charges.

According to witnesses and police at the scene on Friday, the victim and suspect were in some sort of argument leading up to the shooting. A close friend of Naylor who didn’t want to be identified said that Naylor was walking toward the shooter when he was killed.

Registered sex offender shot & killed at home

6-10-2014 Alabama:

A deadly shooting is under investigation in Cullman County.

It happened Sunday at about 7:00 p.m. Sheriff deputies say a man shot at a person through the window of the Berlin Plaza Quick Stop off Highway 278. No one was hurt, and the suspect drove off on a motorcycle.

While investigators were on the scene, they received another call about a shooting at a house down the street. When they arrived, they found Raymond Earl Brooks, 59, dead from a gunshot wound.

Jay Maynor, 41, was later taken into custody for questioning. Charges are expected to be filed Monday.

Elmore Correctional Facility prisoner dies from injuries after altercation with another inmate

10-17-2013 Alabama:

A prisoner at Elmore Correctional Facility has died from injuries suffered in an altercation with another inmate.

Derrick Dennis, 34, died Tuesday at 2:55 p.m. at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery, according to Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett. The altercation happened Saturday.
Dennis was serving a life sentence for rape, assault and burglary out of Jefferson County. He was sentenced on Jan. 10, 2006.

Inmate Christopher Smith is a suspect in the death. Smith, 29, is serving a 25-year sentence out of Mobile County for trafficking, possession of a controlled substance, and receiving stolen property.

The Department of Corrections’ Investigation and Intelligence Division is investigating the homicide. Elmore is a medium security prison with about 1,180 inmates.

The incident is at least the fourth inmate-on-inmate homicide in Alabama prisons since Oct. 1, 2012.

In August, an inmate at St. Clair Correctional Facility was stabbed to death by another inmate.

The Department of Corrections reported in its July statistical report that there had been two inmate on inmate homicides during since Oct. 1, 2012, one at Donaldson Correctional Facility and one at Bibb Correctional Facility. ..Source.. by CONUS TOC

Wanted Horry County child rapist shot and killed in Alabama

8-12-2013 Alabama:

Huntsville Alabama police said a man who was shot Friday morning in an incident involving an officer has died.

The victim was identified as Brent Egan Dotson, age 57, who was wanted for sentencing in a case of child rape.

Horry County police had been searching for Dotson who was wanted after being convicted of raping a 6-year-old girl.

Authorities said Dotson failed to show up for his trial in December, but the trial moved forward without him and he was convicted.

Alabama police got a 911 call at 8:07 a.m. Friday about a suspicious person at Mountain View Mobile Home Park on Slaughter Road, just south of Highway 72.

It's not known how long Dotson was in north Alabama or where he may have been staying, WHNT-TV reported.

Mountain View resident Samantha Perry told WHNT that she called police after spotting a man, who turned out to be Dotson.

She told the TV station that she saw the entire shootout unfold from her front window.

"He just didn't look right, he looked disturbed, very crazy," said Perry. "It's kind of shocking cause he could've gotten to my kids and the rest of the kids around here. I just can't believe somebody like that was here… I hate that the man lost his life, but he can't hurt no more kids, and I'm glad."

The Huntsville police officer who fired his weapon remains on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The suspect in the shooting also showed a weapon and fired it, Hobbs said. Police spokesperson Harry Hobbs confirms an officer was involved, and fired his weapon in return.

Investigators are still trying to determine who fired the shot that hit the man.

One of Horry County's Most Wanted killed in AL weekend shooting

Brent Egan Dotson is number one on Horry County's list of most wanted men for failure to appear for a lewd act committed on a child under 16. Horry County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jeff Benton confirmed that Dotson was shot and killed in Huntsville, AL on Friday morning.

Huntsville police say the shooting happened at the Mountain View Mobile Home Park on Slaughter Road near Highway 72 in Huntsville Friday morning.

Officers received a call about a suspicious person at the trailer park sometime after 8 a.m., and police found a man at the premises and questioned him shortly after they arrived. The man then produced a gun and fired a shot. An officer fired a shot in return.

Dotson was transported to Huntsville Hospital and died around 9 a.m. Police are investigating whether his injury was self-inflicted or from the officer.

The officer involved was not injured. As with any officer-involved shooting, he has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

Witnesses said the scene was traumatizing, especially for children who were around at the time. "We know a lot of these kids," said resident Samantha Perry. "It's very scary, especially with my kids not knowing what kind of people are around." Perry said the sounds of gunfire terrified her two children.

The Horry County Sheriff's Office has been working closely with the Huntsville, AL Police Department and their coroner's office.

Dotson's last known address was on Homestown Road in Myrtle Beach. Horry County Sheriff's Office Lieutenant Cox said people who are wanted sometimes try to blend in with tourist and the transient populations along Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach. Some leave the state, and depending upon the severity of the crime, the Solicitor's Office will grant them access to chase them down.
