Suicidal Man Shot Dead by Deputy was Registered Sex Offender Bruce Dawley

6-5-2017 California:

Authorities released the name Monday of a 66-year-old Campo man fatally shot by a deputy during an exchange of gunfire in a rural neighborhood near Lake Morena County Park.

Bruce Dawley of Campo — a registered sex offender — made a 911 call shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday from his home in the 2500 block of Gladiola Drive and reported that he was suicidal and armed with a gun, according to sheriff’s officials.

“Deputies arrived a short time later and established a perimeter in front of the home,” said Lt. Kenneth Nelson. “Shortly after doing so, deputies heard at least one gunshot … from inside the home.”

Moments later, Dawley appeared at the front door of his house, holding a pistol.

During a brief confrontation, Dawley allegedly fired at least one round from the handgun at deputies, prompting one of them to shoot back with a shotgun. Dawley then retreated back into his residence.

Getting no further response from Dawley, sheriff’s officials sent members of a SWAT team into the home, where they found him dead from a gunshot wound to his torso.

Though authorities were initially unsure whether Dawley’s fatal wound had been self-inflicted or resulted from the deputy’s return fire, the county Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the latter was the case, Nelson said. ..Source..

Fugitive Rapist Floyd Ray Cook Shot, Killed by Kentucky Police

10-30-2015 Kentucky:

A rapist who was the target of a six-day manhunt after allegedly shooting a Tennessee cop was killed by police early Friday in what officials described as a "scary" conclusion.

Floyd Ray Cook, 62, was fatally shot near Burkesville, Kentucky, after being traced to a wooded area with the help of a police helicopter's thermal camera.

Law enforcement agents converged on a building in the hunt for Cook, who was accused of shooting a Tennessee police officer during a traffic stop on Saturday.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Billy Gregory said two colleagues and a U.S. Marshal encountered the fugitive on an embankment near Kentucky Route 61 about seven miles south of Burkesville.

"Cook had a handgun and gunfire was exchanged," Gregory said. "Cook was wounded and was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured."

Earlier, Cook approached a home in Cumberland County near the Tennessee border at around 2:40 p.m. local time (3:40 p.m. ET) and asked for a ride, but the couple refused and called police, Gregory said.

Deputies: Man was shot 'because he's a sex offender'

9-22-2015 California:

CITY OF SHASTA LAKE, Calif. - The Shasta County Jail has released the mugshot of a suspect who deputies said shot another man after learning he was a registered sex offender.

Timothy Gould, 28, was arrested Monday around 5:30 p.m. after officers had identified him as a suspect in an earlier shooting in the City of Shasta Lake.

According to a news release from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, the motive behind the shooting was due to the victim Roy Matagora, 62, being disliked because he is a registered sex offender.

The Megan's Law website for registered sex offenders showed Matagora was previously convicted of several charges including rape, and several charges relating to the sexual abuse of a person under the age of 18.

The shooting investigation revealed Matagora had been spending time with a woman in Shasta County, Tanna Curran, 25, during the week prior to the shooting. Investigators said Curran had been an acquaintance of Matagora's and she would borrow his vehicle and associate with him at his home.

Deputies said sometime Friday, Curran discovered that Matagora was a registered sex offender from other people who knew of Matagora's past. Curran and Gould looked at the Megan's Law website and saw Matagora was in fact listed as a registered sex offender.

He is accused of killing Michael Wimbert on Dec. 1 at Wimbert's apartment at 68 Demarest Ave. in West Nyack, where he had been living for several days. Wimbert met his Lentini Nov. 27 through an advertisement for a roommate placed on Craigslist, Clarkstown police said.

New Jersey man gets five-year sentence in killing of Boy Scout leader he said had raped him decades ago

12-10-15 New Jersey:

A New Jersey man who admitted killing the Boy Scout leader he said had raped him decades earlier received a five-year sentence Thursday, according to reports.

Clark Fredericks, 50, will be eligible for parole in roughly nine months after getting the shortest possible state prison term for passion/provocation manslaughter and credit for time served since the 2012 stabbing, NJ Advance Media reported.

Fredericks, from Stillwater in Sussex County, pleaded guilty in June to the slaying of former Boy Scout leader and retired corrections officer Dennis Pegg, 68.

Fredericks had said in his plea statement in county Superior Court that his scout troop leader had sexually assaulted him and raped him “from the time I was 8 years old until I was 12 years old.”

“I said over and over to him 'how does it feel raping little kids now?'” Fredericks told the court about the killing. “I also repeated 'it's not so fun raping little kids now, is it?' At the end I slit his throat.”

Michael Anthony Aparicio Charged with Special Circumstances Murder for Halloween Slaying

11-10-15 California:

UPDATE NO. 3, NOV. 9, 12:20 P.M.: Michael Anthony Aparicio is scheduled to be arraigned on a special circumstances murder charge today for allegedly strangling 61-year-old Floyd Taylor Jr. to death inside a Stanton motel room Halloween morning, the Orange County District Attorney's office announced.

Aparicio, 27, of Anaheim, could get life in state prison without the possibility of parole if he is convicted of felony special circumstances murder with a sentencing enhancement allegation for murder during the commission of a robbery.

Around 6:15 a.m. on Oct. 31, Aparicio met Taylor inside his motel room at the Chester Inn in Stanton, where surveillance footage viewed later showed Taylor left his room alone but returned twice within the next hour, the OCDA says. After the last time Taylor returned, Aparicio allegedly wrapped a bungee cord around the older man's neck, strangled him, placed a pillow over the victim's face and pulled the bed covers up over the body before taking Taylor's wallet and fleeing the scene, prosecutors claim.

Pegg was stabbed more than 20 times in his neck, chest and stomach, authorities say.

“From the time I was 8 years old until I was 12 years old, I was sexually assaulted and raped by Dennis Pegg,” Fredericks told the court in his impassioned plea, CBS in New York reported.

“It started with him wanting to touch my scar that I had through open-heart surgery at the age of 6,” Fredericks continued. “It progressed to wrestling matches and eventually led to him raping me.”

Shooting death of convicted sex offender may create new leads in cold case

2-5-2015 South Carolina:

SUMTER COUNTY, SC — The shooting death of a convicted sex offender may drum up some new insight for investigators who are attempting to crack a cold case that has remained a mystery since 2012.

Officials with the Sumter Police Department believe that 65-year-old Johnny Singleton, who was found shot to death in his vehicle on Jan. 27, befriended 18-year-old Aaron Abraham whose decomposed body was found in August 2012 along a roadside near Wedgefield.

A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division background check revealed that Singleton is a registered sex offender with a variety of misconduct charges dating back to 1976 including lewd acts on a minor, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, criminal sexual conduct and disturbing schools among others.

Tonyia McGirt, a Sumter Police Department spokeswoman, said investigators believed Singleton had knowledge regarding the disappearance of Abraham after they discovered that the teen would go to Singleton’s home and do chores such as cutting Singleton’s grass.

Abraham was last seen leaving the Sumter County Library on July 19, 2012 and was reported missing by his mother on July 22. A month later, Abraham’s remains were discovered by a man collecting cans along S.C. 261 and Cane Savannah Road.

Investigators still searching for motive in 'brutal' killing of Carmichael man

Note highlighted portions in the second story below.

March 2013 California:

Sacramento County sheriff's investigators have found no evidence of any altercation or argument leading up to the fatal stabbing of a Carmichael man Wednesday night.

The attack, described by authorities as "brutal," appears to have been "a very spontaneous event" and the motive remains unclear, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos.

Killed in the attack was 65-year-old Roy Shier, according to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.

Just before 11 p.m., deputies were called to a home on the 6200 block of Coyle Avenue after receiving a report of a stabbing. Deputies found Shier, who had suffered "significant trauma consistent with sharp force and blunt force trauma," Ramos said. Shier was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses quickly told deputies the identity of the alleged attacker and gave a description. Deputies found the alleged assailant, identified as 26-year-old Kenneth Azlin, on the campus of a nearby elementary school and arrested him. They also found the weapon believed to have been used in the attack, Ramos said.

Former Scout Leader had child porn on computer when stabbed to death by former scout, court filing says

10-23-2014 New Jersey:

A former Boy Scout troop master, allegedly killed by a former scout who claims the man molested him decades earlier, had child pornography on his computer at the time of his death, according to court testimony.

Dennis Pegg, a 68-year-old Stillwater man who was stabbed to death on June 12, 2012, had numerous photos of child pornography on his computer, prosecutors said in court this morning, according to John Vazquez.

Vazquez is an attorney for Robert Reynolds, one of the two suspects charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing.

Vazquez said that that Gregory Mueller, first assistant Sussex County Prosecutor, listed the photographs of child pornography as part of the evidence in the case.

Mueller did not comment.

Bloomfield man shot and killed by police was under investigation for child sexual assault

9-21-2014 New Mexico:

Search warrant sheds light on fatal, officer-involved shooting of John Rogers

AZTEC — The 61-year-old Bloomfield man shot by a police officer in late August was under investigation for multiple counts of criminal sexual penetration of minors at the time of his death, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Bloomfield Police Chief Randy Foster confirmed that John Rogers was under investigation by his department on suspicion of child sexual assault. He said that for legal reasons, he could not discuss the specifics of the case.

Jonathan Rogers, John Rogers' son, referred questions to the family's attorney, Brendan O'Reilly of Albuquerque. O'Reilly said he had no comment on the investigation.

The affidavit, issued Aug. 28 to investigators from the New Mexico State Police, sheds new light on the shooting of John Rogers at his home on 414 Ruth Lane.

Two officers from the Bloomfield Police Department were dispatched to the residence at 10:18 a.m. on Aug. 27, after receiving reports of a suicidal man.

Double murder suspect/child rapist claims his roommates were thinking of grooming boys

8-18-2014 Washington:

TACOMA — A child rapist from California allegedly admitted killing his two roommates in their Spanaway-area home Sunday, telling police he suspected they were interested in grooming young boys for sex, according to court documents released Monday.

Richard Atkisson, 40, appeared in Pierce County Superior Court Monday. He was ordered held in the county jail without bail while deputies continue investigating the murders. He is wanted in California on $50,000 arrest warrant for a sex charge, the documents state.

Court documents say Atkisson used a pipe Sunday to beat both Joseph Moisa, 60, a registered sex offender, and Michael Henderson, 20, inside the Spanaway-area home he had shared with them for the past year.

Henderson died after Atkisson allegedly forced him to his knees and continued beating him. Moisa didn’t die from the beating, according to the documents, so Atkisson used a plastic bag over his head to suffocate him.

Vassalboro man sentenced for November murder

7-14-2014 Maine:

Courtney Shea pleaded guilty and apologized in court Monday for killing Thomas Namer of Waterville.

AUGUSTA — Murderer Courtney Shea and victim Thomas Namer had known each other for 20 years, “a relationship which was complicated and troubling,” according to Shea’s defense attorney.

Shea, 31, of Vassalboro, pleaded guilty Monday in Kennebec County Superior Court to murdering Namer, 69, and was sentenced to 32 years in prison.

The length of the sentence was recommended jointly by the state and defense attorney Brad Grant. It was imposed by Justice Michaela Murphy, who said that part of the reason she agreed with the recommendation is that the victim’s family approved of it.

Namer’s body was found Nov. 22 near Shea’s Riverside Drive home in Vassalboro. Namer was stabbed three times through the neck and upper torso, said the prosecutor, Deputy Attorney General William Stokes.

Stokes showed Murphy photos of a large blood pool outside an abandoned yellow and white trailer on property next to Shea’s mother’s. He said investigators responding to Shea’s Nov. 22 report of a dead man, found Namer’s body behind the trailer, his foot sticking out from under a large pile of logs, as well as indications his body was dragged to the back of the trailer.

Testimony: Woman killed grandfather after catching him peeping on her girlfriend

4-29-2014 Pennsylvania:

Woman allegedly stabbed her grandfather after catching him peeping on her girlfriend.

Chene A. Mejias said she caught her grandfather "pleasuring himself" last month while peeping on her girlfriend in the bathroom of their south Allentown apartment and stabbed him to death, an Allentown detective testified Tuesday.

Mejias, 21, said she continued stabbing her grandfather, 65-year-old Wilson A. Mejias, until he wasn't moving anymore, purposely aiming for his neck because "she knew he would die," Allentown Detective Stephen Milkovits testified. Mejias fled to New York, where she turned herself in to police the next day, police said.

Milkovits was the only witness to testify during Tuesday's preliminary hearing and District Judge Donna Butler found enough evidence existed to send a homicide charge against Mejias to Lehigh County Court.

Mejias told Milkovits she had been walking her dog and returned home around 1 a.m. March 10 when she caught her grandfather standing outside the bathroom "pleasuring himself" while her girlfriend Tiffany Benitez was inside, the detective said.

Recently identified (via Home Address Checks) Fresno sex offender murdered

4-3-2014 California:

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Days after a Fresno man was identified as a sex offender, he turned up dead. Now, two people will stand trial for his murder.

Lawrence Ballesteros was stabbed to death in Sept. 2012, just days after a sex offender sweep. An autopsy showed Ballesteros was stabbed 58 times before his body was dumped near Chandler Airport.

Investigators believe the attack stems from the kind of anger you'd expect from a parent who just found out a pedophile had become a family friend.

When U.S. Marshals and local police went door-to-door tracking sex offenders, Lawrence Ballesteros was right where they expected him. The sting apparently blew his cover, though, and made him a target.

"There was a big uproar in this neighborhood," said defense attorney Gerald Schwab. "There were a lot of angry people confronting him about this report of him being a sex offender."

Less than a week later, a group of early morning walkers found him dead on a frontage road a mile from the detached garage where he was living.

Police arrested David Barrera and Patricia Perez for murder. Perez lived in the front house with her partner and their children. Investigators say she and Ballesteros were drinking buddies, and Barrera often joined them. They believe the shock of the revelation drove Barrera and Perez to kill their friend.

"That's exactly what they're saying is this is a case of vigilante justice -- my client killing somebody because he was a sex offender
- however, there's no evidence to prove that," said Schwab, who represents Barrera. "There's no murder weapon. There are no eyewitnesses."

There is a Barrera fingerprint in Ballesteros' apartment, though. There's also video of his truck in the area where Ballesteros' body was dumped. Investigators found the victim's blood in that truck. But with no confession, prosecutors may have to dig deeper.

ABC30 legal analyst Tony Capozzi says a history of abuse could connect the suspects to this murder because of the brutality of the attack.

Homeless Kirby man arrested in death of host

6-20-2013 Texas:

Stephen Knutson was known for his generosity toward homeless people, but it was that kindness that also apparently led to his violent slaying earlier this month.

Knutson, 67 and a registered sex offender, met Levi Anderson Bonds at a church in Kirby and invited the homeless 35-year-old to stay with him in his trailer in the 5500 block of FM 78.

Less than a week later, as the two were watching a San Antonio Spurs-Miami Heat game, Bonds reportedly broke Knutson's neck and stabbed him multiple times before leaving him dead and nude in his bloody bed. According to Kirby police, Bonds then took Knutson's TV, his car and credit cards, which he used to fund a week-long spending spree.

Bonds was arrested Wednesday on one count of capital murder in connection with the death of Knutson. A judge set bail at $1 million.

“He was a wonderful guy, and he was committed to the work,” said Alamo United Methodist Church Pastor George Chambers. “He just always tried to help people. He had a rough life and a lot of problems earlier, and he was just trying to do what's right.”

Last week, a friend of Knutson's called police and asked them to check on Knutson, whom they hadn't seen for several days. At the trailer, officers saw a swarm of flies and smelled something foul. Fearing someone was injured inside, police broke into the trailer and found Knutson's decomposing body.

“A noticeable amount of blood was also present on the pillows, bed and carpet in the room as well,” according to the arrest warrant affidavit.

A couple of days later, police found Knutson's stolen car. The Texas Rangers got involved in the case and contacted the victim's banks, who had flagged several transactions they considered to be suspicious at Wal-Mart, Best Buy and numerous gas stations, the affidavit states.

Then, police said, Bonds' girlfriend and the mother of two of his children contacted officers and said she had information on Knutson's death. She had kicked Bonds out of her home in May, the affidavit states, but the two remained in contact. Earlier this month, he told her he was going to stay with a friend he'd met through church named “Steve.”

After Knutson's death, Bonds reportedly visited his girlfriend and told her he had “blacked out” and “snapped,” after Knutson caressed his hand, the affidavit states. He told his girlfriend that “the next thing (he) realized was that 'Steve' was beaten badly and 'blood was everywhere,'” according to the affidavit.

In the next days, the couple purchased diapers, beer, laptops and hotel rooms using the credit cards. The laptops, along with a TV taken from Knutson's home, were pawned for cash.

Kirby police Sgt. Michael Alonzo said the investigation is ongoing, and charges against the girlfriend might still be forthcoming. He added that the case is not being investigated as a hate crime but instead as a capital murder: “We believe there was some truth to (the claim of unwanted sexual advances), but we think there was more to it,” he said.

He added that Knutson had been a Kirby resident for several years, and although he was on the sex offender registry, police didn't have problems with him. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Knutson was convicted in 2002 of indecency with a child. The incident, which took place in 1999, involved an 8-year-old girl. ..Source.. by Eva Ruth Moravec
