Homeowner killed wanted suspect 'to protect myself, my family, and my neighbors'

July 2017 Tennessee:

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A man wanted by police for ramming Memphis police cruisers and speeding off was shot and killed by a homeowner over the weekend.

The homeowner said it was all in self-defense.

The homeowner said he was in his driveway trying to protect himself, his family, and his neighbors. As a last resort, he opened fire.

Larry Hampton said he has some remorse for shooting and killing the man in his driveway, but he stands firmly behind his choice to pull the trigger.

"To protect myself, my family, my neighbors. I feared for my life," Hampton said.

Burglar shot to death inside Tarrant home identified

3-19-15 Alabama:

Authorities today released the name of a man shot to death last weekend when he broke into a Tarrant home.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the man as Ronnie Anthony Brooks. He was 26.

The shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Springdale Road.

Brooks was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at 10:56 a.m. Sunday, according to the coroner's office.

Tarrant police detective Sgt. Phillip George said the homeowner, who is in his 70s, and his son, who is in his 40s, were home when the man broke in through the back door.

The son woke up and saw Brooks entering his bedroom. He fired several shots.

Texas Woman Shoots, Kills Home-Invading Sex Offender

2-11-2015 Texas:

On Tuesday, a Texas woman home alone shot and killed a sex offender allegedly breaking into her house. She then dialed 911.

According to the Tyler Morning Telegraph, 37-year-old Christopher Ray Foster was allegedly invade a home in Van Zandt County, Texas, when the woman inside armed herself and shot. The woman called 911 about 4:30 a.m. and police arrived to find Foster’s body.

Foster “had a lengthy criminal history” and had recently been jailed following an accusation of “failing to comply with registration requirements as a sex offender.”

Sheriff Michael Ray commented on the way the homeowner defended herself: “Presently, as the result of under-funding and inadequate staffing at the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, homeowners need to take appropriate precautions to protect their families.”

Authorities: Unknown who fatally shot man after attempted house break-in near Haysville

12-30-2014 Kansas:

Someone shot Cody Don Reid in the chest and left him to die Monday afternoon. Who shot him remained unknown Tuesday.

Sedgwick County sheriff’s Capt. Greg Pollock said Tuesday that the last thing the 27-year-old registered offender did before he died was try to break into a house in the 7800 block of South Broadway near Haysville.

But it wasn’t the resident who shot Reid, Pollock said. After the resident told Reid he was calling police, Reid ran off. The resident heard gunshots, looked out and saw Reid on the ground and a dark-colored car speeding down the driveway toward Broadway, Pollock said.

Deputies found Reid mortally wounded, and he died outside the house.

Authorities are seeking the fleeing car, described as a dark-colored 1980s or 1990s sedan. Pollock asked anyone with information about the car or the shooting to call sheriff’s investigators at 316-660-5300 or Crime Stoppers, 316-267-2111.

On Tuesday, Pollock read a statement about the shooting to reporters and said investigators don’t know who shot Reid. The resident didn’t know Reid, Pollock said. Two people were in the home at the time of the shooting. The resident called 911 about 4:08 p.m.

Río Arriba Sheriff's Office files murder charge in death of Taos man

1-18-2013 New Mexico:

Río Arriba County Sheriff Tomas Rodella has announced the arrest of Kaiwee Martínez, 35, in the shooting death of Lawrence Sandoval, 33, of Taos.

According to information from the Sheriff's Office, Sandoval was killed Nov. 3, 2012 at Martínez' home in Alcalde.

"The defendant had told (Río Arriba Sheriff's Office) investigators that she shot Sandoval in self defense," a release from the office states.

According to the release, items entered into evidence underwent forensic analysis, and results of that analysis were received this week. Martínez was arrested without incident Thursday (Jan. 17) and booked into the Río Arriba County Detention Center in Tierra Amarilla, the release states, where she is being held on a $100,000, cash-only bond.

"We conducted a comprehensive, detailed investigation into Mr. Sandoval's homicide over the course of the (last) 10 weeks," Rodella is quoted as saying. "Early on, our investigation determined that the defendant's account of events preceding the shooting was not credible." ..Source.. by The TAOS News

Investigators doubting claim in fatal NM shooting

12-7-2012 New Mexico:

Investigators appear to doubt the self-defense claim of an Alcalde woman who fatally shot a man inside her home last month.

The 35-year-old woman hasn't been charged in the case and the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office still is investigating.

The woman claims a man barged into her home Nov. 3 and tried to undress her at knife point.

She says she reached under a pillow, grabbed a loaded gun and shot 33-year-old Lawrence Sandoval of Taos and then fled from her home and called 911.

The Albuquerque Journal (http://bit.ly/XzzaiJ) reported Friday that police statements filed in the case indicate the woman gave differing versions of the events that led to the shooting.

But the woman's lawyer says his client "has nothing to hide" and "this is a self-defense situation." ..Source.. by The Daily Times

Intruder killed in Henderson home invasion

12-16-2012 North Carolina:

Henderson, N.C. — Police are investigating a fatal shooting Sunday at a Henderson home that appeared to result from a home invasion.

Deyon Durham, 24, of 279 Faulkner St., was found shot to death at 1221 Montgomery St. shortly after 7 a.m., police said.

The initial investigation suggests that Durham was breaking and entering at the home when the homeowner, whose name was not released, shot him.

No charges have been filed. Investigators planned to consult with the district attorney's office.

Durham had convictions, starting in 2005, for indecent liberties with a minor, sexual battery, breaking and entering vehicles, larceny and failure to register as a sex offender, according to state Division of Adult Correction records. ..Source.. by Bridget Whelan, Anne Johnson
