Sex offender is latest Wichita homicide victim

12-26-2014 Kansas:

WICHITA, Kan. -- A registered sex offender is the victim of Wichita's latest homicide. The neighbor who called police after the victim showed up on his porch is talking tonight. "Having Someone, your neighbor, come over and just die right on your porch. It was a terrible thing before Christmas," said Jim Ormerod.

He was home at 11:30 P.M. on Christmas Eve listening to a sermon before bed when his Christmas was changed for good. His 32 year-old neighbor Steven Manuel was bleeding. A 16 year old boy was with the victim begging for help.

"They were both over here", Ormerod explains. "I mean he was laying on the ground blood all over everything. But it was the young boy that asked me to call 911 and that's basically what i did."

When police arrived they transported Manuel to Via Christi Saint Francis. He died at the hospital shortly after. Ormerod lived next door to Manuel for a few years, but never saw the 16 year old before. A young man will likely never forget.

Girl, 16, faces 25 years for strangling molester

8-22-2014 Arizona:

Mentally ill teen 'said they got in a fight and he was hitting her'

A 16-year-old mentally ill girl – who is accused of killing her 43-year-old statutory rapist – now faces up to 25 years in prison for second-degree murder.

Jessica Burlew of Glendale, Az., reportedly suffers from schizophrenia and autism. She has been charged as an adult for the murder of Jason Ash, 43, a man described by almost every media outlet that has reported on the case as her “boyfriend,” even though the age of sexual consent in Arizona is 18.

Burlew, who is accused of strangling Ash with an electrical cord on Jan. 28, said the two had been engaged in a sexual game of autoerotic asphyxiation, a method of increasing sexual excitement by cutting off oxygen to the brain.

According to court documents, Burlew claimed Ash didn’t say the “safety word,” and she told police she began cutting him with razor blades in an attempt to wake him up since she believed he had passed out.

Once Burlew realized Ash wasn’t waking up, she said, she continued “cutting” him to “alleviate her stress from the situation.”

Sex offender killed by teenage niece

10-22-2013 Georgia:

Child charged with murder, held at youth detention center

A convicted sex offender was stabbed to death by her 14-year-old niece.

Monday night, paramedics found the body of 49-year-old Shirley Elaine Mack on the kitchen floor of her small brick home on Scott Store Road just north of Midville.

She appeared to have a single stab wound to her chest.

The child accused of killing Mack had been living in the house along with four younger children.

“It appears that they got into some kind of argument and the girl got a knife and stabbed (Mack),” Sheriff Greg Coursey said, noting a 911 call was received around 8:30 p.m.

Although the child’s name has not been released, the sheriff confirmed the 14-year-old is being held at a youth detention center in Sandersville. GBI Special Agent Pat Morgan told The True Citizen she is charged with murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

A punch from nowhere, and Michael Daniels' rough life ends in a senseless beating

5-30-2013 New York:

With a cold Bud Ice in his plastic bag and change for the bus, Michael Daniels was good to go last Thursday night.

A two-block walk to the bus stop, a short ride across town to the North Side and he could call it a day. He had mowed his former landlord's lawn on West Brighton Avenue earlier, which had left him breathless.

Daniels never made it to the bus. He left that corner in an ambulance, beaten senseless by a group of youths, at least one of them appearing as young as 10 years old. Daniels died a day later.

Police have made no arrests and they say they don't know the attackers' motive. Daniels was not robbed.

The killing in front of Los Amigos Grocery has people in the neighborhood shaken.

Some have since come into the store and mentioned the May 23 ambush as a version of a street game called "knockout," in which an attacker tries to knock out an unsuspecting victim with one punch, said Joe Brown, the son of the store's owners, Ruben and Marjorie Colon.

In an old city neighborhood of rundown houses, churches, schools and storefront social service agencies, Los Amigos sells lottery tickets, cold drinks, chips, canned goods and household essentials.
