Inmates found dead are identified

This post is to record death of Donald Peacock

5-11-15 Nebraska:

Both of the prison inmates found dead inside a housing unit at Tecumseh State Correctional Institution Monday morning were child sex offenders serving long sentences.

Donald Peacock was a year into a 40-to-50-year sentence from Dodge County, and Shon Collins had served about five years of a 66-to-80-year sentence out of Box Butte County.

Both men were 46. Prison officials believe both were killed by other inmates.

State Corrections Director Scott Frakes said it's possible inmates took advantage of the situation to settle existing grievances, and a former Tecumseh prison employee said it's probably not a coincidence that the two were convicted of the same crime.

"You almost can bet the offense is due to the crime," said the former employee. "It's striking that they were both child perps and the only two that died. ...

"It would appear that someone found a good chance and took it," he said.

Search Warrants: South St. Paul Teacher, Husband Investigated for Sexual Contact with Boys

Murder-Suicide: Both were accused of sexual offenses. see article

8-31-2016 Minnesota:

New details are emerging about the investigation into a South St. Paul teacher and his husband who were found dead in Washington State.

Graphic court documents detail that at least three teenagers reported they had been sexually assaulted by 40-year-old Aric Babbitt and 36-year-old Matthew Deyo.

Babbitt and Deyo were found dead on Lopez Island north of Seattle last Thursday. Both died from gunshot wounds, and their deaths were ruled murder-suicide; San Juan County Sheriff Ron Krebs said a suicide note was found that said the couple had visited the island years ago and loved it.

According to search warrants, a 16-year-old boy and his parents reported a sexual assault to police on Aug. 14.

The teenager said Babbitt had been his teacher and mentor and was in charge of him while volunteering at Lincoln Center Elementary.

GBI: Remains belonged to man wanted on sex crime charges

1-4-16 Georgia:

COVINGTON, Ga. — Georgia Bureau of Investigation testing has confirmed that skeletal remains found last week in Covington belong to a man who had been wanted on child pornography charges since 2011.

Covington police said in a statement Sunday that skeletal remains found Dec. 28 in Covington were positively identified as David Lee Sheffield (47) through dental records.

Federal authorities had charged Sheffield in 2011 with the production, distribution and possession of child pornography and accused Sheffield of filming a video of himself assaulting a minor boy in the 1990s.

Police say Sheffield's remains were found less than an eighth of a mile away from where Sheffield's car was found abandoned at a Covington motel in 2011. Authorities did not say how Sheffield died, but said a firearm was found nearby. ..Source.. by wsbtv.com

Courtroom applauds as New Jersey man admits fatally stabbing Boy Scout leader he says molested him

6-18-15 New Jersey:

A New Jersey man admitted in court to fatally stabbing the Boy Scout leader who he says repeatedly molested him as a child — to thunderous applause in the courtroom.

Clark Fredericks pleaded guilty Wednesday in Newton, N.J., to passion provocation manslaughter in the brutal slaying of retired correction officer Dennis Pegg three years ago.

Pegg was stabbed more than 20 times in his neck, chest and stomach, authorities say.

“From the time I was 8 years old until I was 12 years old, I was sexually assaulted and raped by Dennis Pegg,” Fredericks told the court in his impassioned plea, CBS in New York reported.

“It started with him wanting to touch my scar that I had through open-heart surgery at the age of 6,” Fredericks continued. “It progressed to wrestling matches and eventually led to him raping me.”

8-6-15 California:

A Santa Fe woman is suing the federal government over the beating death of her 72-year-old husband in a California prison after he was convicted on child pornography charges.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque, says prison officials are to blame for putting retired Wall Street attorney Robert A. Warren in a communal cell at the Victorville, Calif., prison with another inmate whom they knew was a danger to him.

A judge in February 2011 sentenced Warren to five years in prison. The lawsuit, which also described him as a university instructor, philanthropist and author, says he was killed on Dec. 29, 2011.

In his plea agreement, Warren had admitted to receiving a video clip online of a man sexually assaulting a prepubescent female who was tied up with a rope and to having on his computer 2,621 images and 26 videos depicting child pornography.

Carol H. Warren says in her complaint that a forensic psychologist concluded that Warren was a good candidate for outpatient treatment because he was amendable to treatment, had no history of violence, sexual or otherwise, and was “lacking many of the historic behavior problems that are associated with re-offenders.”

Investigators still searching for motive in 'brutal' killing of Carmichael man

Note highlighted portions in the second story below.

March 2013 California:

Sacramento County sheriff's investigators have found no evidence of any altercation or argument leading up to the fatal stabbing of a Carmichael man Wednesday night.

The attack, described by authorities as "brutal," appears to have been "a very spontaneous event" and the motive remains unclear, said sheriff's Sgt. Jason Ramos.

Killed in the attack was 65-year-old Roy Shier, according to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.

Just before 11 p.m., deputies were called to a home on the 6200 block of Coyle Avenue after receiving a report of a stabbing. Deputies found Shier, who had suffered "significant trauma consistent with sharp force and blunt force trauma," Ramos said. Shier was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses quickly told deputies the identity of the alleged attacker and gave a description. Deputies found the alleged assailant, identified as 26-year-old Kenneth Azlin, on the campus of a nearby elementary school and arrested him. They also found the weapon believed to have been used in the attack, Ramos said.

Officer-involved shooting victim was a convicted sex offender

11-13-2014 Mississippi:

"We were coming outside last night and the cop that was standing over there told us to get back in. And then about 10, 15 minutes later a cop came banging on the door and told us we needed to get our kids, that there was a man over there who had a gun to his head, and SWAT was coming in, and they needed us to get our kids and get out," says Jessica Grant.

Grant lives next door to the home where 42-year old Mark Bartlett was fatally shot by a Pearl Police Officer Friday night. The officer had to use deadly force to subdue Bartlett.

Bartlett was shot in the chest after posing a threat to his wife and the officers who responded to the domestic disturbance call earlier in the evening. A bullet hole is visible in a window of the home.

The incident took place at the Highlands Mobile Home Park in Pearl.

Grant says her children play outside quite a bit, running from yard to yard. She lives in the home with her husband, children, her friend Crystal Farrar, and Farrar's children. They were forced to leave the area until the threat was gone.

Dog brings home sex offender's skull, U.S. marshals say

11-17-2014 Texas:

AUSTIN, Texas — The case of a former Army specialist who escaped from federal supervision was closed Monday after officials said the sex offender's skull was found in a field two months ago.

The skull of Kevin Patrick Stoeser, 41, was discovered Sept. 8 when a woman's dog, who had escaped from the backyard overnight, returned with a pile of animal bones and a human skull. The skull appeared "weathered" and likely was there for some time, officials said.

Although police dogs searched areas nearby after the find, they did not recover additional human remains.

Stoeser was added to the U.S. Marshals Service 15 Most Wanted fugitives list in May after running Oct. 24, 2013, from a halfway house in Del Valle, Texas, about 7 miles from Austin. At the time, staffers had confiscated a smartphone that he was not authorized to have and found more than two dozen images of scantily clad young girls.

Former Scout Leader had child porn on computer when stabbed to death by former scout, court filing says

10-23-2014 New Jersey:

A former Boy Scout troop master, allegedly killed by a former scout who claims the man molested him decades earlier, had child pornography on his computer at the time of his death, according to court testimony.

Dennis Pegg, a 68-year-old Stillwater man who was stabbed to death on June 12, 2012, had numerous photos of child pornography on his computer, prosecutors said in court this morning, according to John Vazquez.

Vazquez is an attorney for Robert Reynolds, one of the two suspects charged with first-degree murder in connection with the killing.

Vazquez said that that Gregory Mueller, first assistant Sussex County Prosecutor, listed the photographs of child pornography as part of the evidence in the case.

Mueller did not comment.

8-4-2014 New York:

A fugitive pedophile who was gunned down in New York City in daylight was turned in by his boss who recognised him from a television crime show.

Charles Mozdir, 32, had been on the run since 2012, but thanks to the tip, authorities tracked him to a Greenwich Village smoke shop, sources told the New York Daily News.

Steve Zhik, who owns Smoking Culture on W. Fourth St., alerted cops that Mozdir was working as a salesman at his store after seeing an episode on CNN’s new series The Hunt about the wanted man last week, sources said.

But when NYPD Det. Mario Muniz and two U.S. Marshals arrived on Monday afternoon, Mozdir opened fired, wounding the three lawmen.

The sex offender who had been on the run for two years after skipping bail for molesting two boys under the age of seven in California was shot and killed in the dramatic shoot-out with federal marshals and police.

Zhik, 33, could not be reached for comment.

A woman Mozdir was seeing also saw the show and was so disgusted she decided to give him up.

Three officers shot, suspect killed in New York City

Officers involved in deaths of suspects return to duty

3-1-2014 Florida:

Law enforcement officers involved in three separate violent confrontations in January have been placed back on duty while state investigations of the incidents continue.

Eustis police said detective Gary Winheim, who shot to death an armed man on Jan. 7, returned to work on Jan. 16 after the department’s command staff and a representative from the State Attorney’s Office met with Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigators.

“The evidence clearly indicated the use of force was warranted under the circumstances presented,” Police Chief Fred Cobb said on Thursday.

FDLE will turn over the results of its investigations to the State Attorney’s Office, which will determine if any charges will be filed in the cases. A FDLE spokeswoman said Thursday that none of the three investigations has been completed, so they can’t comment on any of them.

The shooting occurred at Laurel Oaks Apartments in Leesburg. Three detectives from the Leesburg and Eustis Police departments, including Winheim, went to the complex and met with 47-year-old Vernum Blunk to talk about allegations of sexual misconduct with a child and possession of child pornography. Police said at some point during the investigation, Blunk armed himself with a handgun that had been concealed in the room and threatened the Eustis detective.

A Keene man was found dead inside his home at 170 Pearl St. in Keene Saturday night, according to the N.H. Attorney General’s Office.

David E. Wheelock, 48, was the victim of an apparent homicide, N.H. Assistant Attorney General Benjamin J. Agati wrote in a news release issued Sunday.

Agati said in an interview with The Sentinel that Wheelock was shot and killed at his home just after 9 p.m. It is unclear how many shots may have been fired.

At approximately 9:28 p.m., Keene police responded to the Pearl Street residence for a medical call. That’s when they found Wheelock dead at an undisclosed location inside the home.

Lawrence Root, Wheelock’s friend and former roommate, told WMUR that an upstairs neighbor told him that he heard a knock on the door just before 9:30 p.m. Within seconds, he said, someone had fired a gun and quickly escaped the home. Wheelock was found dead in the kitchen, Root told the news outlet.

The office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to conduct an autopsy today to determine the cause and manner of death. Agati said he is not sure whether the results of the autopsy will be available for release to the public this afternoon or Tuesday.

As of this morning, police had not arrested anyone in connection with the shooting, Agati said.

Florence inmate killed to stay in prison, officials say

12-5-2013 California:

A Mexican citizen illegally in the United States killed a prison cellmate in order to remain in custody, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

The Sheriff’s Office said it is recommending that prosecutors charge 43-year-old Roberto Venegas-Fernandez with first-degree murder in the Nov. 16 killing of 55-year-old Michael Patrick McNaughton

Both men were prisoners of the U.S. Marshals Service, which has said they were from the San Diego area and housed at a Corrections Corp. of America prison in Florence pending their transfer to the Bureau of Prisons.

The killing occurred during what was initially reported as a fight between the two men.

However, Sheriff Paul Babeu said Venegas-Fernandez told investigators that he choked and stomped McNaughton because “he likes it in prison and was afraid of being released, since he has nowhere to go.”

“Roberto wanted to find a way to stay in jail, so while the victim was sitting on his bed, he choked him until he fell onto the ground, then stomped on his head and continued to choke the victim until he was presumed dead,” Babeu said in a statement released by his office.

Police: Member of Penn ‘79 Final Four team killed by wife, she says he had watched child porn

2-12-2013 Pennsylvania:

PHILADELPHIA — A member of the University of Pennsylvania’s 1979 Final Four team was fatally stabbed by his wife, who told police she had caught him looking at child pornography, according to court documents.

Matthew White was found stabbed in the neck around 12:45 p.m. Monday in bed at his home, police said, and was pronounced dead a short time later. An officer responding to the home for a report of a stabbing found White’s wife, Maria Rey Garcia-Pellon, as she pulled into the driveway, authorities said. As she was being taken into custody, according to a police affidavit, she said, “I caught him looking at pornography, young girls. I love kids. I had to do it.”

White was the starting center on the Penn team that went to the 1979 semifinals before losing 101-67 to eventual national champion Michigan State, led by Magic Johnson. White went on to be drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers and also played in Europe.

Garcia-Pellon, 52, was in custody, and a telephone message left at her home was not immediately returned. It could not immediately be determined if she had an attorney.

Investigators said they interviewed a friend of Garcia-Pellon, who told them she had come to her house Monday afternoon and said she had stabbed her 53-year-old husband after catching him viewing pornography — possibly child pornography — on the computer. The friend called police.
