Man shot and killed by Spokane police early Sunday morning identified

1-18-17 Washington:

The man who was shot and killed by police early Sunday morning has been identified as Dexter Martin Dumarce, 33.

Dumarce died from four gunshot wounds, according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Dumarce was shot and killed after he apparently led police on a foot chase from the South Hill toward downtown starting at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. According to a police news release, Dumarce was stopped in the area of Ninth Avenue and Adams Street, a “high crime area,” because he was acting “suspicious.”

Dumarce pulled a knife on the officers and fled on foot, according to a police news release. Police say they first used Tasers, which didn’t stop Dumarce.

The investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Everett last Saturday night continues. Evidence gathered in the investigation showed that the 44 year-old suspect made multiple threats to the female victim via text and phone messages earlier that day.

The messages left by the suspect also indicated that he would kill police. Evidence gathered in the investigation does not show that the suspect was at the exact location where the victim was (the 17500 block of 54th Pl, Lynnwood) at the time those threats were made. Based on messages he sent to the victim, the suspect implied he was in the area, watching Lynnwood officers interact with the victim at her residence.

Cops: Man killed by deputy had been acting erratically

12-7-2016 Florida:

A Leesburg man was acting erratically before he beat a Lake County deputy sheriff with a boat oar during a confrontation in Lake Griffin, prompting the lawman to kill him, a sheriff's official said Wednesday.

The man killed Tuesday was identified as Wayne Donald Dorsey, 49, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Dorsey first ran into a car and then rammed into the Citgo gas station at 4075 Picciola Road before taking off on foot and attempting to carjack another vehicle with a person inside, Sgt. Fred Jones said.

The deputy, who has been with the Lake Sheriff's Office for about 12 years, was placed on paid administrative leave.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, Jones said.

The deputy was not immediately identified.

Agents justified in fatal shooting of MN sex offender, prosecutor says

10-21-2016 Minnesota:

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — A man who was shot and killed by officers at an Alexandria home in August was within 4 feet of the officers while armed with a knife, a release from Douglas County Attorney Chad Larson said Friday, Oct. 21.

Larson concluded the shooting of Adam Jo Klimek, 31, of Carlos, by agents from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was a justifiable use of force done in self-defense.

“I have chosen not to present this case to a grand jury because the facts do not warrant it.” Larson said in his release.

“The two BCA agents involved, agents Elizabeth Eilers and Dustin Vanderhagen, were victims of a crime that day. … In my opinion, they should be commended for their service to the public in the face of lethal opposition.”

Man shot by Madison County deputy dies of injuries; suspect was registered sex offender

1-21-16 Alabama:

The man shot by a Madison County deputy late Wednesday night has died from his injuries.

Randy Joe Sanders Jr., 33, died following surgery at Huntsville Hospital, according to Lt. Michael Salomonsky of the Madison County Sheriff's Office. The Huntsville Police Department is investigating the shooting, at Sheriff Blake Dorning's request, and a shooting review board will conduct its own investigation next week.

Deputies were called just after 11 p.m. Wednesday to Highway 231 in Meridianville, south of Wells Road, for a report of a man with a gun acting erratically at a nearby convenience store. When a deputy arrived, he tried to make contact with the man, later identified as Sanders, but Sanders refused to talk and fled from the deputy.

After a short foot pursuit into the area of the Inspiration Pointe subdivision, Sanders allegedly repeatedly refused to stop and show the deputy his hands.

Shoplifter slashed at off-duty Medford officer before fatal shooting, police say

1-19-16 Oregon:

A man killed Monday by an off-duty Medford police officer was identified Tuesday by police as Timothy Joseph Alex Caruthers, 27, of Medford.

According to Medford police Interim Chief Randy Sparacino, Caruthers had been caught shoplifting at Sportsman's Warehouse and was not being cooperative with store personnel when an off-duty officer stepped in.

Sparacino said the officer, following department policy, presented his badge, asked Caruthers to cooperate with store's security staff, then stepped away.

Once Caruthers was taken inside an office at the store, he became unruly again.

"The suspect produced a knife and slashed at the store personnel to escape from the office," Sparacino said.

Robbery suspect killed at KFC by police has extensive criminal record

1-18-16 Missouri:

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI) - There is more information about the man shot and killed by St. Louis police last night during an alleged armed robbery at a Kentucky Fried Chicken. The man known as "Big Wes" is gone, and now new information is surfacing about his past troubles with the law.

St. Louis City Police continue to investigate the shooting that happened near Gravois And Grand Avenue. According to investigators Crayton West, 52, robbed the KFC and pointed a gun at a police Sargent when confronted at the restaurant.

The officer who was called to the scene by a witness. He fired at West, killing him.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that West became a registered sex offender in 1980 for assaulting a teenaged boy. He also served time for robbing seven restaurants in October of 1986. FOX 2 is also told West was recently dealing with financial issues.

Police say the encounter was caught on camera inside of the restaurant. So far both the video and name of the officer have not been released.

As we've reported, there have been plenty of police shootings in Colorado of late.

Indeed, there was one at 3:20 p.m. yesterday on the 111000 block of Huron Street, when an officer with the Northglenn Police Department shot a man who allegedly had opened fire on cops responding to a report of a "male party with a gun," according to the NPD. The suspect was hospitalized but survived, and no police officers were injured.

But while some of these incidents, including the January death of seventeen-year-old Jessie Hernandez, have been controversial, the gun-down of Damien Ramirez is unlikely to follow suit.

That's because Ramirez is a sex offender who was slain after he carjacked a vehicle at gunpoint, led law enforcement on a wild highway chase and was shooting back at officers when he was killed.

Kentucky fugitive killed in shootout with police after five-day manhunt

10-30-15 Kentucky:

The fugitive who police say tried to murder an officer, sparking a massive, five-day manhunt, died in a shootout with Kentucky State Police early Friday.

Floyd Ray Cook, 62, a convicted rapist and robber, had been on the run since Saturday afternoon, when he allegedly shot and wounded a Tennessee police officer.

Police said two troopers and a U.S. Marshal encountered Cook Friday after responding to a report of shots fired near an embankment on Kentucky Route 61 in Burkesville. When they arrived, Cook and the officers exchanged fire.

Cook was wounded in the shootout and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cumberland County Coroner. Cook was only armed with a handgun, according to police. No officers were injured by the gunfire.

Robbery suspect shocked twice with Taser before he died

9-1-15 Ohio:

Officers first heard screams and the wail of a car horn. Then they spotted a man wedged in a vehicle’s window as he struggled with a woman behind the wheel.

That was the scene Cincinnati Police Chief Jeffrey Blackwell described to reporters Tuesday, some 12 hours after an officer tried to subdue James Carney III, 48, with a Taser. The attempt didn’t work, Blackwell said. Carney kept punching, choking and even biting the 41-year-old woman who had stopped at a Shell gas station to use the ATM at about 10 p.m. Monday.

Officer Anthony White then deployed the Taser a second time.

Carney stopped assaulting the woman, went limp and died shortly after, police said. An investigation is under way.

The incident marks the fourth police-involved death this summer in Cincinnati, and the third for the city police department specifically. In each CPD instance, police officials said that the officers involved acted appropriately, responding to suspects who were either armed or in the midst of an attack.

“Officers should be forced to use force,” Blackwell said Tuesday. He added that the initial investigation indicates that White indeed was forced.

Carney has had a series of run-ins with law enforcement, some of which stemmed from violent crimes, according to court records. He was convicted last year of sexual battery, landing him on Ohio’s Sex Offender Registry. He also had been arrested on charges of robbery, falsification and possession of drug paraphernalia over the years.

Rapist killed by police in Oak Cliff beat murder charge

7-9-15 Texas:

Joe Cody was a rapist. He was a robber. He was a thief. And, authorities say, he once murdered a man at random — though he beat the rap for that on a technicality.

“He was a sociopath. He really was,” said former prosecutor Andy Beach. “He was a scary, scary fellow.”

A Dallas County jury agreed and quickly decided in 1985 that Dallas was safer without Cody on the streets. It sentenced him to life in prison.

Yet, Cody, 59, was free Tuesday afternoon, back in Dallas and walking around Bishop Avenue while known to the state as a moderate-risk sex offender. When Dallas officers swarmed him to arrest him for violating his parole, he pulled out a handgun.

Within seconds, Cody was dead. No one else was hurt, or could be hurt again by Cody.

Police investigators Wednesday were still sorting through what happened. Cody’s family portrayed him as a caring man who wasn’t likely to shoot at police officers, but his criminal history suggests he was a violent criminal who committed heinous, senseless acts.

Burglar shot to death inside Tarrant home identified

3-19-15 Alabama:

Authorities today released the name of a man shot to death last weekend when he broke into a Tarrant home.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the man as Ronnie Anthony Brooks. He was 26.

The shooting happened just before 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 200 block of Springdale Road.

Brooks was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at 10:56 a.m. Sunday, according to the coroner's office.

Tarrant police detective Sgt. Phillip George said the homeowner, who is in his 70s, and his son, who is in his 40s, were home when the man broke in through the back door.

The son woke up and saw Brooks entering his bedroom. He fired several shots.

4-21-15 Ohio:

Suspected serial rapist Abram Bynum died on a Far East Side freeway in 2009 during 20 seconds of Columbus police gunfire.

The four-year legal fight that followed between Bynum’s mother and the city now might be over after a decision favorable to the city was filed last week by a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The court found that Bynum’s rights were not violated and that the police officers were on firm legal ground when they killed him, reversing a decision that had been issued 18 months earlier by U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley.

Attorneys for Columbus had asked Marbley for a summary judgment that would end the case, arguing that the incontrovertible facts demanded that it be decided in the city’s favor.

Marbley instead found that Kathryn Pollard raised enough questions of fact that a jury might conclude that police acted recklessly and excessively when they fired 80 rounds at her son, striking him 23 times.

Man accused in rape dies during arrest

4-21-15 Tennessee:

COLUMBIA, TN (WSMV) - Police in Columbia have launched an investigation after a man died in police custody.

Brian Acton, 40, was a convicted sex offender in Utica, KY, and was on the sex offender registry. In 2013, he was charged with raping a woman at a motel in Columbia.

Police said Acton attacked another woman on Saturday night and died after police put him in handcuffs.

Beckett Street in Columbia is usually quiet, but it was shaken after police said a woman was raped inside her home by a man she barely knew.

"You just don't expect that to happen right up the street from the house," said Marshall Brooks, a neighbor.

Police kill man in vehicle associated with rape, arson suspect

3-28-15 California:

The Bakersfield man accused of raping a woman Friday morning and then setting her home on fire was shot and killed by police after a pursuit that night.

The county coroner's office confirmed Saturday that the man who police killed in a hail of gunfire in the 4000 block of Union Avenue was Adrian Hernandez, the 22-year-old suspected of attempted murder, kidnapping and sexual assault.

Police had been searching for Hernandez after naming him a suspect in the rape of a woman believed to have been his roommate at a house in the 10000 block of Tungsten Street, west of Old River and north of Harris roads. A warrant for Hernandez's arrest was issued, and he was believed to be armed and dangerous.

A Bakersfield Police Department news release said officers spotted Hernandez's vehicle at about 9:45 p.m. Friday near Hart Park. It said they tried to pull over the vehicle on Panorama Drive but the driver refused to stop.

Suspect in officer-involved shooting was just paroled

4-15-15 Missouri:

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Police say they are "95 percent" sure the man an officer killed Wednesday night in a parking garage was the same one wanted for a robbery earlier that day.

On Thursday Highway Patrol would not confirm the name of the suspect until the autopsy was complete. The autopsy is happening on Thursday.

Deputy Chief Jill Schlude with the Columbia Police Department told reporters outside Hitt Street Garage that they strongly believe Mark W. Adair, 51, died when he and an officer exchanged gunfire on the second floor of the parking structure just before 11 p.m.

An officer with the University of Missouri police department went to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries he suffered during the shooting. At this point, police aren't sure if his finger was injured by a bullet or just during the confrontation.

ABC 17 News learned Adair had a lengthy criminal past.

Update: Prosecutor deems police-action fatal shooting justified

3-27-15 Indiana:

Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt says he will not pursue charges in a police-action shooting that occurred Feb. 25 on Terre Haute's east side. Alexander Phillip Long, wanted on a warrant, died in the shooting.

Modesitt told assembled media at a morning news conference that the shooting was justified.

Officer Kurt Brinegar's actions "were consistent with exercising self-defense or defense of another to prevent serious bodily injury or death or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony," Modesitt stated in a news release.

Long's actions that day "placed many people in danger, including the community and the officers who attempted to arrest Mr. Long on a warrant," Modesitt stated. He issued his decision after reviewing a report compiled by Indiana State Police, who submitted results of their lengthy investigation to him a week ago.

During a news conference, Modesitt told reporters, "This was an unfortunate situation that was caused by the defendant in this case. If at any time he would have complied with the orders and the requests he was receiving from law enforcement, the result would not have been the same. Unfortunately, he refused to comply."

After a thorough investigation, "We've determine officer Kurt Brinegar's actions were justified and there were not any criminal acts committed by any of the officers involved in this case," Modesitt said.

17-year-old fatally shot during home invasion, rape, robbery, Gadsden police say

4-14-15 Alabama:

Gadsden police say a 17-year-old was shot to death Monday following an apparent home invasion, rape and robbery.

Capt. Bobby Jackson said the sequence of events began about 3 a.m. Monday. Three men, at least one with a handgun, committed a home invasion robbery in the 2100 block of Norris Avenue.

The resident, a 37-year-old woman, told police three men kicked in the front door, awakening her. One of the men came into her bedroom, put a gun to her head and raped her while the other two ransacked the home.

The two men left, but the robber assaulting her began beating her in the head with the gun and demanding money. The woman told her attacker that a neighbor down the street kept all her money. The robber then forced the woman down the street to the neighbor's home on South 21st Street, the woman told police.

Carjacker was convicted sex offender

4-10-15 Indiana:

The suspect in Thursday’s high-speed pursuit, identified as Don O’Neal Smith, 29, of Elkhart, had prior convictions, according to court records. One of those convictions was rape.

Smith led law enforcement in two states on a high-speed pursuit beginning in Watseka, Ill. Thursday afternoon.

Though the pursuit garnered the attention of multiple media outlets, it was not Smith’s first brush with law enforcement.

In 2003, Smith, 17 at the time, was charged with rape and robbery, class c, in St. Joseph County Superior Court. Smith was convicted of the rape charge in 2005 and was later placed on the state sex offender registry. He was slated as being on lifetime registration.

It is unclear whether or not Smith was convicted of the 2003 robbery charge.

Convenience store robbery suspect shot dead by police in Klamath Falls

11-17-2014 Oregon:

Klamath Falls police officers shot and killed a man Sunday evening suspected of robbing a convenience store.

Officers from the Klamath Falls Police Department, the Klamath County Sheriff's Office and Oregon State Police pursued a trio of suspects leaving the Frontier Market in Klamath Falls allegedly with stolen cash.

Lenny Miles, 37, and two other suspects were on foot about two blocks from the market when the confrontation with officers took place, said Rob Patridge, Klamath County District Attorney. Miles was shot in an exchange of gunfire. He was pronounced dead at 9:41 p.m. at Sky Lakes Medical Center.

Two other suspects who allegedly assisted Miles in the robbery, were uninjured. Garrett Michael Peterson, 27, and Samantha Darlene Robinson, 26, were arrested and lodged in the Klamath County jail on first-degree robbery and criminal conspiracy charges.
